Power cuts resulting from Escom’s load shedding are affecting South Africa’s image as a tourist destination and could hamper the country’s preparations for the 2010 Soccer World Cup, said Michael Tatalias ceo SA Tourism Services after 500 tourists were trapped on Table Mountain for several hours following a power cut. “Forget the soccer in 2010. We’ll be in deep trouble by then, and we’re hoping to have more than 300 000 visitors, all using electricity.
He added that major building projects for 2010, including Gautrain and the soccer stadiums, would be disrupted. “We have to ask ourselves honestly if we can still do this?”
