A visit to the village of Gariep the other day decided Smiffie that it was high time we did something about the state of President Hofmann Street, which is an appalling advertisement for our town.
What is it about us that, whereas Gariep looks like a brand new village, straight out of the box, ours looks as though it has lost interest in itself?
There is not a sign of litter on the streets of the village overlooking what is increasingly being referred to as Lake Gariep (sounds much sexier than “Dam”) and every garden in the place looks as though the residents are preparing for a competition for the best kept and most colourful.
Did I hear someone say “Well, they’ve got so much water at hand…?” Absolutely true, but we were told that it’s not cheap.
Smiffie is offering a prize in the hopes that it might encourage every storeowner or manager on Pres. Hoffman to take a hard look at their own bit of pavement and keep it clean, the now famous coloured bins not overflowing , and – we can dream, can’t we – even put up the odd flowerboxes.
After all, a business that looks clean from the outside can only attract more of the right type of attention!
We will arrange for a regular point scoring from 1 to 10, based on the general state of the pavement in front of each and every store on the street. Our team will check on litter, cleanliness and state of the refuse drums and mark accordingly. At six-monthly intervals a prize will be awarded to the store with the best score.
Good luck with the idea of cleaning up Pres. Hoffman, I’m sure it will make a big difference to the town as a whole and maybe it can extend to the other roads as well. If everyone just keeps his own bit of pavement tidy what a chain reaction might follow. We must start getting ‘house proud’
