It is now possible to clearly identify houses streets and significant features about town.

There are some intriguing features that are not readily apparent from the ground, it is clear for instance that at one time Smithfield was a much more formidable town, look at the grid of streets in the bottom half of the picture. And what is the oval shape in the bottom left corner? It looks like a track of some sort. Could Smithfield at one time have had a dog or horse track? If you know the answer, please let us newcomers to Smithfield know in the comments.

BibberChill 2008 was vir seker ‘n reuse sukses.

It all turned out well in the end. BibberChillFestival 2008 is back on the calendar as an undoubted success.

The weather was as good as we could expect for this time of the year – and fully justified the name of the Festival – yes, it was a bit chilly.

Traders could have done better and there are ideas to be followed up to ensure improved business for exhibitors next time.

The one thing we should be quite confident about is that the Festival does have a future and is well worth the considerable amount of effort put into it by a lot of people. This has also been confirmed to us by the number of people from outside Smithfield who have sung the Festival’s praises

There is also no doubt that the immense contribution by Letsatsi was an important factor in the day’s success. What is more, Johian van Zyl, one of the two partners in the game lodge, has made it clear that they see themselves as part of Smithfield and are keen to involve themselves in focussing more attention on the town.

Smiffie salutes not only all members of the committee, but also the large number of enthusiastic supporters who devoted much time, energy, as well as their own financial resources, towards really consolidating BibberChillFestival on the calendar as an annual event of importance.

Organised by the local art group but supported by many others, the event introduced several newcomers to the local scene. Bethulie’s Bets de Bruyn’s sculpture was an interesting addition, as was the fascinating dot-art of Pietie Steyn, also from Bethulie.

Two other visiting artists, both from Zastron, exhibited for the first time in Smithfield. Anari Lategan displayed her fascinating sketches of children while Sarah Bekker specialises in landscapes.

Another newcomer, helping to consolidate Smithfield’s role in local art, Hester Hattingh came to the exhibition from Aliwal North with an established reputation while regulars, Jo du Plessis from Rouxville and namesake, but unrelated, Annette du Plessis of Bethulie again put their stamp on the exhibition and helped place the emphasis on its interesting diversity.

The support from Richard Proctor Sims in the form of a display of works from his own gallery in Philippolis was the added strength the exhibition needed to confirm it’s success.

She may not be a Smithfielder in the true sense but Charlene Snyman has certainly done us proud in the way she steered this year’s BibberChill to success.

Taking over the chair of the organising committee very late in the day, she immediately took control and although she insists that what happened was a team effort there is no denying that she was very much the leader of that team. She showed great professionalism and experience and in assuming many of the duties herself, was particularly valuable in providing access to a variety of specialised services.

Charlene was born in Bloemfontein and, before assuming the role of Sales and Marketing Manager for Letsatsi, had similar responsibilities for a large hotel group on the Garden Route. She has two sons, a 14-year-old and a 6-year-old.

Smithfield Police Arrest 17

Smithfield police arrested 17 suspects in May in connection with different crimes and are following up leads following the break-in at the Factory Shop last month.

Of the arrests made during May, two were in connection with robbery, one for riotous behaviour and two for general theft. Malicious damage to property and domestic violence led to another arrest, and assault GBH to six others.

Of the other arrests, three involved drinking in public, two for being drunk in public.

Commenting on the general increase in crime, Superintendent Willem Bekeer reports that while Smithfield is not faced with some of the more serious crimes, it is essential for the community to take a stand to ensure that they do not occur here.

Birding history is being made in South Africa at the moment – and now in Aliwal North as well. A major project is underway, officially entitled the South African Bird Atlasing Project No 2 (SaBap, for short). The last time birders made an “atlas” of South Africa was 15 or 16 years ago, when everyone was involved in an official record trying to trace where which birds occur in this country.

Now, they are repeating the exercise, and because it is such a mammoth task, they have set aside five years for the job. The purpose is to see whether birds are changing their distribution patterns (if so, it could be caused by changes to their habitat or by climate change) and the way they move around. Of course it will also provide a chance to re-do areas that might not have been properly atlased the first time. Altogether, the project should provide a more complete and up to date picture of where what birds are to be found.

The most important element of the project is the involvement of what people call “citizen scientists” – people like you and me who have other jobs and earn our living in many different ways, but who are interested in nature and in birds particularly. Without these “citizen scientists”, the atlas project could not hope to be successful.

It’s a massive task – the whole of South Africa is divided into quarter quadrants that measure roughly 30 square kilometres. Within each of these are nine pentads that cover about six square kilometres each. If the organisers could get their best wish, each one of these pentads would be properly “covered” by a knowledgeable birder, following the special rules laid down for the project, for example, the minimum number of hours to be spent in each area in order to qualify for a proper atlasing session.

Of the 1 863 pentads, just 121 have been covered so far, a full year into the project – that’s 6.5 percent of the total. With only four years left, there’s still a great deal of work to do.

Smithfield is at least on the map and has been partly covered, thanks to the birding weekend we had last November. Some of the birders who participated in the event sent completed cards to the atlas organisers and so we have proper representation (though of course it would be wonderful if we had more people atlasing this area in order to cover the ground more than once).

But the point I want to make is that we have a real role model just down the N6 from us. Arnold van der Westhuizen of Aliwal North has been working very hard on all his local pentads and he has covered them all – single-handedly. He has done all his nine pentads at least twice; the only person in South Africa to have achieved this feat.

Professor Les Underhill, vice-president of the International Ornithological Committee, has sent out an email to South Africa’s birding community which starts, “Arnold van der Westhuizen has struck gold in Aliwal North.”

He says this is the third quarter quadrant with gold status (after Wakkerstroom and Somerset West), but that this one is extra-unusual: “Arnold’s achievement is special for two reasons — all 27 checklists were made by him, so it is a solo gold award. Secondly, the number of species on the 27 checklists is 172, only four species short of what was reached on 68 checklists for (the first bird atlas project).”

Our congratulations to Arnold who is a great friend to birding enthusiasts in Smithfield, always ready to lend his expertise and to rush over, check some special find we have made and share in our excitement.

Dankie.

Ounooi Badenhorst, namens Smithfield Inwonersforum

En lekker tea time drink.

So is die tuinbouklub-idee amper “gegaps” by Dewetsdorp.

We All Got Lift
We make no apologies this month for concentrating your attention on the “Bibber- You-Know-What” - but after all, you have to admit that it was a big thing on our calendar and it did give the town a lift – and we all thoroughly enjoyed it.

This event has now grown into something of which we can all be proud. The success of the first BibberChill was largely built on the absurd idea that grown up people, farmers in fact, would actually take part in a competition to see how far they could catapult sheep. The bright idea attracted a lot of publicity and, incredibly enough some of the more naïve, including a major national trader, thought we were serious and withdrew its support. But it did succeed in its purpose of focussing the attention of an awful lot of people – even if the sheep in questiAon bore only a passing resemblance to the real thing.

Nothing as outrageous was required this year because the firm foundations for success had been laid.

…And the Crowds Came
The people responsible for coming up with the idea of a BibberChill Festival in the first place should now please take a bow. Their original idea was a great one.

The likes of John Melville and Marco Heymans and their team who actually “drove” the original management must be delighted at how the festival has blossomed.

For those who took over the reins this year, putting in huge effort over the past six months, Saturday’s success makes their contribution thoroughly worthwhile.

Any doubts about whether BibberChill2008 would attract the crowds was quickly dispelled on Saturday when cars began pouring into the Golf Club from early morning.

And any doubts about the weather were equally unfounded, and apart from a fairly chilly breeze later in the day we experienced nothing more uncomfortable than a bit of Bibber and a touch of Chill.

Visitors from Bloemfontein and our surrounding neighbours did us proud and a fair sprinkling of people from such foreign parts as Gauteng lent something of an “international” flavour to the occasion. Particularly pleased with the day was Elmarie van Aswegen. Several people came from Bloemfontein specially to buy her cheese.

Certain of the events were still too far removed from the centre of action so we lost connection with what was happening with the sheep shearing and the cycling and not enough was made of the at exhibition at the Red Barn. But there is nothing that is not “fixable” for the future – this is important.

A Bull For The Butterflies

A friend, who raises horses near Kei Mouth, and a regular visitor to our neck of the woods, told me the other evening of the trials and tribulations of learning to cope with a quite different animal.

He has just introduced a herd of Nguni cattle and is having an interesting time converting his attentions from horses, with which he has been involved for years, to the different requirements of what some African tribes call the butterflies of cattle of the cattle world.

So far it’s a learning curve that is far from complete and so far has included selecting a suitably promising bull to service the ladies – and waiting with baited breath to find out if the investment was worthwhile. After a long period of disinterest, it was with huge relief that his choice for ensuring the future of his herd was up to the task.

Toe gaan hónner Plaaspresident daardie president daar anderkant!

VOORKOMING IS BETER AS GENESING

with Julian

Don’t forget to….
Mulch around the root system of vulnerable plants before our real winter sets in.

Protect your frost-tender plants. Vilene seems to be as good as any other method and it’s available locally at around R4 a meter. Otherwise make grass wigwams or drape hessian around a tripod of poles. Make sure you leave an opening to let in the sun. Even cardboard boxes are fine and you can remove them during the day.

Water seedlings before the sun reaches them to avoid cell damage. Water stronger plants in the morning when the soil has thawed a little. Plants can’t get water from frozen soil, but the soil needs to dry out before nightfall.

Empty your hose every day and store it where the water in it won’t freeze, or rest it on a downhill slope to allow the water to run down. Don’t use it until the sun gets to it.

Bug Busting
This month watch out for aphids on conifers, tulips and willow trees. To keep aphids away naturally, finely chop a large onion and two cloves of garlic. Mix in a little dishwasher liquid and two cups of water and blend them all together. Strain the mixture, pour into a garden sprayer and cover as much of the plant as you can with the concoction. Repeat every five to seven days.

Give roses a pre-pruning dose of fresh lime sulphur (one part sulphur to ten parts water) towards the end of June on a dry day, provided bushes have dropped all their leaves. Scale undetected can kill roses. Conventional insecticide won’t work. You need to use an oil based one like Oleum. It’s also good for indoor plants and makes the leaves shine. Only spray on upper surfaces. Remember that scale is one of the biggest bugbears for plants - excuse the pun.

Food is starting to get scarce for the birds, so help them. Put out crushed maize or chicken food, sunflower seeds and smaller wild bird seed, fruit, bone meal and breadcrumbs. Don’t feed them too many breadcrumbs because then they tend to lay “soft boiled eggs”, i.e. soft shells or no shells which is not much fun for the new babies.

I’ve given you a lot to do in June. Sit down with a mug of hot coffee and a tot of rum and read it all carefully. Cheers.

May - a month full of fun:

We’ll start at the end - the BibberChill Festival…….it’s over, it was loads of fun, it was a great success. Everyone was watching the weather forecasts for weeks before the event and fortunately the day dawned bright and chilly and we were able to “bibber” in true fashion. We hope this issue of the Smiffie gives you enough of the atmosphere of the day. We could have filled another 40 pages with pictures and saved ourselves a lot of writing this month!

Special thanks go to the ‘dames’ who organised and ran so much of the festival. The men couldn’t have done it without us. I was part of the judging team for the three events to choose Miss Lammetjie, Miss Lam and Miss Jong Ooi. They were all so delightful we wished there had been a prize for every one of them. Those events were arranged by Lizette Prinsloo and I was particularly taken with her attention to detail for the judges. Each of us received a plant-box of pansies, a handmade bookmark, a packet of mints, a glass and jug of water and a personalised note of thanks. How very thoughtful.

Garden and Book Club Meetings
We also had a long awaited Book Club meeting at Ellen’s home so there was much to discuss and a lot of books that we’d even forgotten we’d read. Ellen is feeling much better after her fall and the next meeting will be held towards the end of June. Check the Diary of Events.

The Garden Club meeting due to be held at the Willows in Bloemfontein to celebrate the 40th anniversary was postponed until October. (See piece by ZaZa on another Smiffie pge). Instead we all sat outside at No.19 on the von Ahlefeldt patio and Julian discussed what we should all be doing for our winter gardens and preparations for the Spring. It was a perfect Autumn morning with bright sunshine and no wind. Julian answered dozens of gardening questions with his usual affability, proclaiming the garden he’d created only seven months ago to be the best in the district! It is looking terrific.

The next Garden Club meeting will be held on June 10 at Irene Swanepoel’s farm, Groenfontein. Contact Hercules for further details on 083 518 8008.

Did You Know?
It’s Father’s Day in June which is celebrated on the same day all over the world, unlike Mother’s Day which is, confusingly, celebrated on different days in different countries. The celebration was started by Sonora Smart Dodd from Washington. She and her five siblings were raised by their father, after their mother died during childbirth. Dodd petitioned to have the third Sunday in June recognised as Father’s Day and encouraged people to wear a rose in honour of their dads. And so it came to be.

Interestingly, your dad may be related to every other man in the world. Geneticist Spencer Wells analysed human DNA across the globe and concluded that men share a common male ancestor who lived in Africa around 60,000 years ago. We know a lot of men who wouldn’t care to have this known. And, of course, we women still think our dads are unique and undoubtedly “special”. Make sure you let him know.

Father’s Day Recipe
If you’re not “out on the town” celebrating at a restaurant, try this:

Hearty marinated Oxtail. The secret is the Tassies. Some time ago Wine magazine did an exercise where they compared marinating oxtail in Tassies, with three expensive red wines. In the blind tasting after the cook-off, Tassies came out on top. They found you needed those strong flavours to balance out the meat. It’s good served with brown rice on the side instead of mash. Try it.

1,5 kg trimmed oxtail on the bone
3 medium-sized onions
1 packet rich oxtail soup
1 packet brown onion soup
1 - 2 bottles Tassenberg
1 cup red-speckled sugar beans

Marinate the oxtail in the wine overnight. At the same time soak the beans in water overnight as they need to be softened. Next day, chop the onions and fry gently. Heat oil in an ovenproof casserole dish/pot. Remove oxtail from marinade and brown it in the pot with the onions, retaining all the Tassies please.

Discard the water from the beans. Dissolve the two soups in 1 litre of water, mix them with the Tassies and add it all to the pot with the beans. Add salt and pepper to taste. A few cloves and bay leaves also add to the flavour.

Cover the pot and place in an oven preheated to 140 C, for three to three and a half hours. Leave to stand. This first session can be done the night before because the oxtail must then be cooked again at the same temperature for, possibly, another hour. It may be necessary to add liquid if the dish cooks too quickly or it becomes too thick. MAKE SURE THE OXTAIL IS NOT BECOMING STRINGY. If so, lower the oven temperature. Ovens vary so check and stir occasionally during both cooking sessions. The meat must ‘fall off the bone’ with tenderness but must not be stringy.

TO END WITH:
We make a living by what we earn, but we make a life by what we give.

Beste Smiffie

Ounooi Badenhorst

Dear JJ,

I object to this kind of comment in this local newspaper, and find it a misuse of the powers of the people who have the opportunity to write what they want to in a public platform of this kind. The comments about a local female trader who is relatively new in Smithfield (who I, as a local, can only find one ‘unfortunate’ who fits the role)are nasty and leave me feeling bad. It also makes me wonder if anything I do or say which is not in line with the prescribed “spirit” of the newspaper will also land up in a public, printed sort of character flogging?

There are many other ways to make strong opinions in the printed press, which would get the same point across, without belittling another local who doesn’t have such a public platform from which to speak. It unfortunately smacks of more “gossip” and does not encourage support for the ‘Bibberfees’, or the ‘Smiffie’. It alienates people even more. I also think that in such a small town with so many diverse kinds of people now living here, we should do our best to behave “inclusively” rather than “exclusively”. I mean this to include ALL Smithfielders, from all race groups, cultures and economic standing. Ultimately this would benifit the Bibberfees much more than one trader’s support.

Sincerely,

Kitty Schneider

To Smiffie

I take great umbrage to your “community spirit” article. We all know these comments were aimed at me but now you are denying it was me. Pray tell who else the poor unfortunate soul could be? I do not know of another female “local trader” who fits the description as described by yourself. Perhaps you should think before you write these nasty little comments and take a long, hard look at yourself. You are abusing the power of the Smiffie by using it as a personal tool for your public sloggings.

Furthermore, please do not dictate what I should or shouldn’t do with my business and I do not appreciate your statement that I have an attitude of indifference towards supporting local activities. I support whatever wherever and when I can.

I think nasty comments made publicly and privately are far more damaging to the progress of a town than an “attitude of indifference”. Smithfield is rampant with jealous and petty grievances, perhaps when

Smithfielders sort that out we will all realise the potential of this town and everyone will benefit.

Karin Torode

Ed: We named no names and we believe the matter has been resolved.

Dear Smiffie

Just recently a Bloemfontein University student arrived at our front door. She was not the first, nor will she be the last, - we sincerely hope! Owing to increasing economic pressures, these young people need to supplement their finances. Door to door selling is probably one of the hardest methods. Unfortunately, we are not all able to help them. What we CAN do is to treat them with courtesy. Without the benefit of hearing the other side of the story, it is still upsetting to be told that some Smithfield seniors are so rude this is the last place where anyone would want to live.

Apart from setting a good example to the younger generation, we are trying to market Smithfield as the “Friendliest town” on the Friendly N6 Route. Every visitor, irrespective of age or circumstance, is a potential ambassador. We have lost one. We sincerely hope we do not lose more.

Lynden and Rose Lund

Geagte Smiffie

Elke besoeker, ongeag hulle ouderdom of omstandighede, is a potensiale ambassadeur.

Hy was Hermanus Nicolas Ras.

Enige inligting sal help. Baie dankie.

Mada van Niekerk.

Smiffie antwoord: Kontak Johan Wolfhard by Bloemfontein se Oorlogsmuseum.

Beste Smiffie

Agterstevoor padwerke

My ete sal iewers in Smithfield onder ‘n groot Olienhoutboom wees.

joernalis.
