May - a month full of fun:
We’ll start at the end - the BibberChill Festival…….it’s over, it was loads of fun, it was a great success. Everyone was watching the weather forecasts for weeks before the event and fortunately the day dawned bright and chilly and we were able to “bibber” in true fashion. [...]

Happenings…
The Garden Club meeting at the Cilliers’ farm, Gouda, was super. It was a “first” visit for Smiffie Dames and we found it delightful with wonderful views and hospitality. In the photo above are Cecilia Cilliers and Sibella Smith. The next meeting and venue in May will be announced at the end of April.
The Ins and the Outs for 2008
With quite a bit of time on my hands recently I have spent days going through Jan and Feb women’s magazines to try and give you some idea of the predicted trends in food and fashion for 2008. Hopefully we’ve all got over the dieting period and can now [...]
New Year Re-inventions!
It’s far too late to wish you all a conventional Happy New Year, even though I’m sure you Dames have all had new ideas, new resolutions and thoughts of new life styles or home improvements. Our lives should be on track by now but perhaps yours isn’t yet, so now is a good [...]
Last month’s Events:
At our November Book Club meeting we were visited, well informed and entertained by Professor John Wright who has co-written a delightful book called “Tracks in a Mountain Range”, which explores the History of the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg. John Wright grew up in the foothills of the Drakensberg and spent years hiking and riding in [...]
Christmas Meeting
Zaza has very kindly offered to have the last Garden Club meeting of the year in her lovely park like gardens at Groniging on Tuesday November 13. We should all meet there at 9.30 a.m. for a celebratory Champagne Breakfast. We look forward to seeing as many members as possible.

Magical Gardens
I am constantly amazed at the beautiful gardens created by our farmers’ wives in the Free State these days. When I was young and spent most of my holidays with relatives who farmed in the Free State, I was only aware of the problems my aunts had with their husbands in order to allow [...]
Introduction to the Stars
Sitting outside in the garden, Onder die Windpomp, March 20 was a beautifully warm starlit evening. The Pigout, our UFO Centre, is where we were introduced to the “heavenly stars” (far more interesting than the Oscar Ceremonies in America) by Trudie Venter and Jacques van Delft. Apart from the refreshing outdoor [...]
Jan and Feb Events
After the seasonal rush of parties and events the first two months of the year are usually quiet. If more happens than we are aware of, please send us a short report because all happenings are of interest to our Smiffie Dames and we’d like to write about them.
This month we [...]
Those Dreaded Crocs
Smiffie Dames is delighted to report a great deal of reaction to the criticism of Crocs. Really we don’t have any particular dislike of them, except as a fashion statement….because they’re not. One or two people in town have stopped me to point out that they’re wearing them because they’re comfortable and “fun” [...]
It Was All “Oh, So - 06″!
Were the trends in ‘06 more marked than most other years, or am I just becoming more observant? Perhaps it’s because I’ve given up the “early morning, late night job”. Perhaps it’s because I believe Smiffie Dames need the info or because you Dames certainly aren’t giving me any [...]
