Art in the area has been given a healthy boost with the arrival in Bethulie of Bets de Bruyn and family who have bought the T&T business and renamed it Bethulie Stationery and Arts Supply and Catz Coffee Shop.
Bets de Bruyn is a highly talented sculptor by profession, with many years of experience in this art form, a fact immediately apparent on viewing examples of her work on display in the coffee shop. Her daughter, Salome and son-in-law, “P.T.” are in the business with her.
Bets has already started sculpting in Bethulie as well as introducing a series of drawing classes. She will be exhibiting at the BibberChill Festival art exhibition in Smithfield’s Red Barn.
Her career in sculpting began in childhood and she became a fulltime professional in 1982, producing both abstract and figurative pieces. She works mainly in stone, specifically in Wonderstone which is quarried near Ottosdal in the North West, between Klerksdorp and Schweizer-Reneke. The stone, unique to that area, is softer than marble but harder than Soapstone.
Art runs strongly in this family, “P.T.” producing beautiful works of dot art which he applies to a variety of objects such as old milk cans, as well as to paper.
