Pension day transforms the normally quiet streets of Smithfield into a colourful, bustling informal business sector. Pavements come alive with sellers displaying an interesting mix of clothes, shoes, caps, steel wool and food items. Buyers weave their way between the stalls seeking the best buy, or moving on to other places.
Business is good today said one vendor as another loudly advertised goods for sale.
The local police service maintained a regular patrol of the area throughout the day.
At normal close of business, vendors and customers alike wend they way homeward, some to wait for the next pension day.
Pity they can’t be persuaded to leave the pavements clean when they depart.
