Smithfield from Space
The popular tool for looking down on the earth from space – Google Earth, has been upgraded for the Smithfield area. It is now possible to clearly identify houses streets and significant features about town.
There are some intriguing features that are not readily apparent from the ground, it is clear for instance that at one time Smithfield was a much more formidable town, look at the grid of streets in the bottom half of the picture. And what is the oval shape in the bottom left corner? It looks like a track of some sort. Could Smithfield at one time have had a dog or horse track? If you know the answer, please let us newcomers to Smithfield know in the comments.
